As 2020 began, I made a promise to myself that I would read or listen to one book a month. This was something I had always wanted to achieve and I can say that I am close. One more book to check on this goal!
I came across Reese Witherspoon book club on Instagram @reesesbookclub where they share one book a month. I started following them and started with my first for January 2020, Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. This book is about race, class and identity. You get absorbed on the life of the different characters, Emira, Alix, Emira’s BF and BFF. It is a page turner as you want to see how things turn out with Emira and Alix. I would recommend if you are wanting a fast read,
For February 2020 books, it was The Scent Keeper: A Novel by Erica Bauermeister. This book was one of my fave. It was very magical story. A story of father and daughter and their life in this remote island. How the Emmeline, the main character, who is trying to figure out how they got to the remote island, about her mother, her young love and her future as a Scent Keeper. I total must read especially if you love that magical and whimsical feeling. I also listened to Open Book by Jessica Simpson which was very eye opening into her life and how she portrays such a different life on social media than what she is capable. I was always a Jessica and Nick forever! LOL!
For March 2020 book, The Jetsetters by Amanda Eyre Ward. This book is a fun and entertaining book of a family who goes on vacation on a cruise and they each have their own issues to resolve. I do recommend this book if you want to laugh and connect with the Perkins family.
As quarantine started, I switched my focus to more self-help/self-development as to be able to get through this strange and hard time. For April 2020 book, I listened to Get Out of Your Own Way by Dave Hollis. This book deals with the different lies we tell ourself that prevent us to achieve our dream/goal. A must read if you need a push to get out of your way!
For May 2020 book, I listened to Girl Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis. This book also helps guide you in achieving your goal. It is another way that shows our pitfalls and the way we get in our way to not move forward to get what we dream.
For June 2020 book, I read Untamed by Glennon Doyle which was part of @reesesbookclub. In reading this memoir, Glennon shares her struggles and empowers all women on how to get up and keep going. To share our true self! A true must read for everyone to see how we need to love and believe in ourselves as to have a happy life.
For July 2020 book, listened to Incomparable by Nikki and Brie Bella. This is another autobiography (not read by the authors) of twins Nikki and Brie Bella and their early life and how they got into the WWE. They share their struggles and achievements and how they did it all together.
For August 2020 book, listened to Messages from Above by Monica the Medium. This was a different turn for me but I was in a time where I wanted to learn about the spiritual world. In listening to this book, Monica shares her gift and how she connects with the spirit world. She shares stories of those people she has connected with their loves. You will laugh and cry as these stories cling to your heart.
For September 2020 book, I listened to City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert. My boss had recommended this book to me a while ago, so I ended up downloading as an audio book and boy it was a great fiction story. It had me wanting to keep listening to see what happened next with all the characters. It is filled with so many diverse characters that you end up loving and hating some. I, too, recommend this book, 100%!
For October 2020 book, I listened to the Mindy Kaling short stories. There are 6 short stories and she goes into each part of her real life. Shares stories about her kid, her work and her family. They are funny and super entertaining. Along with the short stories, I listened to another book from Rachel Hollis, Didn’t See That Coming by Rachel Hollis. She wrote this book during quarantine and during her break-up from her husband. It is a book on how to survive hardship and crisis. She shares tips on how she was able to move along the hard times and to continue working on getting to a place where you can smile again. If you are going through a hard time, this book is super helpful.
For November 2020 book, I read the actual book of Didn’t See that Coming by Rachel Hollis since the Target edition has questions in the back to help you breakdown your struggles and come up with a plan,
For December 2020 book, I am listening to Think like a Monk by Jay Shetty. I just started listening to this book but I hear amazing things. I will update this post once I am done listening.
For the first time, I read 12 books (actually 13 books) in 365 days! I am super happy with myself as it had always been my goal to do this. I know life is hard and busy but If I can do it, you can too! 😀
